This image was taken on December 19th 2006 at 18:01 EST (23:01Z) from my back yard in Zanesville Ohio. Separation had occurred 50 minutes earlier. You can see the Payload Bay doors are open and the distinct planform of the wings and underside of the Orbiter. On the ISS you can see the golden colour of the Solar Arrays as well as the main superstructure. At the moment the image was taken, the pair were (approximately) 340km (211 miles) at an altitude of 82 degrees above the horizon moving in a North Easterly direction.
To capture the image I used a 10 Inch Meade LX200 Schmitt Cassegrain Telescope (powered off and aimed manually) along with a Philips SPC900NC webcam. During the pass I shot in the region of 3900 frames, of which only a few showed good results. This is the best of the good frames. Using Photoshop I adjusted the Histogram levels, ran a 'High Pass' Sharpening Filter and resized the image.
